Best Exterior Masonry Paints for UK Weather
UK weather is tough on exterior paint. Learn which masonry paints perform best.
Exterior painting is a specialist skill within the decorating trade. Best Exterior Masonry Paints for UK Weather requires understanding of weather, substrates, products and timing that goes beyond interior work.
The UK climate is tough on exterior paint. Rain, frost, UV and pollution all attack exterior surfaces, and a poor job will start to fail within a year. A properly executed exterior paint job, by contrast, should last five to seven years on render and eight to ten years on timber.
In this article, we cover the essential knowledge for exterior painting — from surface preparation to product selection to weather considerations — so your exterior work looks great and lasts.
Key Tips
Check the weather forecast — do not paint in rain, frost or high humidity
Clean exterior surfaces thoroughly — algae and dirt prevent adhesion
Use breathable masonry paint on render — non-breathable paint traps moisture
Repair cracks and damage before painting — paint will not hide them for long
Prime bare timber before painting — exposed wood absorbs moisture
Paint in the right conditions — not too hot, not too cold, not too windy
