This is an estimating tool. The decorator remains responsible for checking all measurements, costs, tax treatment and final pricing before sending a quote to a customer.

What this calculator does

The decorating job price calculator helps you build a job price room by room. You enter labour time, materials, additional expenses, markup and VAT, and the calculator produces a live breakdown of costs, a suggested customer price and an estimated profit margin.

How to use it

Add a room and select the work involved — walls, ceiling, woodwork, doors, preparation, wallpaper removal or other work. Enter your estimated labour hours or days, your hourly or day rate and the number of decorators. Add materials, additional expenses and any parking, travel or waste disposal costs. Set your markup percentage, toggle VAT and apply a customer discount if needed.

How the calculation works

Labour cost is calculated from your time, rate and number of decorators. The subtotal is the sum of labour, materials and additional expenses. Markup is applied to the subtotal. VAT is added where selected. The customer discount is deducted from the VAT-inclusive total to give the suggested customer price. Estimated profit is the difference between the suggested price and your total costs.

What could affect the result

Actual labour time, material price changes and unexpected preparation work all affect your final profit. This tool helps you estimate and plan, but the decorator remains responsible for checking all measurements, costs, tax treatment and final pricing before sending a quote to a customer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a quote I can send to a customer?
No — this is an estimating tool that helps you work out a price. To send a professional quote to a customer, create a free Trade Assist account and use the built-in quote builder.
How do I work out my hourly or day rate?
Use the decorator day-rate calculator on this site to calculate the minimum rate you need to cover your income and overheads, then use that figure here.
Should I charge VAT on decorating jobs?
If you are VAT-registered you must charge VAT on most decorating work. Toggle the VAT option and enter the current rate (20% standard). If you are not VAT-registered, leave it off.
What markup percentage should I use?
Many decorators aim for a 20–50% markup depending on the job complexity and local market. Use the markup and profit margin calculator to understand the difference between markup and margin.
