Results are estimates. Always check the manufacturer's coverage information on the paint tin, consider the surface condition and application method, and order a small buffer for touch-ups.

What this calculator does

The paint coverage calculator estimates how much paint you need for a decorating job. Enter your wall, ceiling or woodwork measurements along with the number of coats and the paint coverage rate, and the calculator works out the total paintable area, the litres of paint required and a recommended number of tins.

How to use it

Choose whether you are painting walls, ceilings or woodwork using the tabs. Enter the number of walls and their dimensions. The calculator automatically deducts standard door and window openings on the walls tab — you can adjust these sizes if your openings are different. Enter the number of coats, your paint coverage rate (check the tin) and your preferred tin size. Add a wastage allowance if you want a buffer.

How the calculation works

Total wall area is the combined width × height of all walls. Standard door and window areas are deducted to give a net paintable area. Paint required in litres is calculated as (net area × number of coats) ÷ coverage per litre. A wastage allowance is added on top. The calculator then recommends the most efficient combination of tins to cover the required litres.

What could affect the result

Porous or bare surfaces may need more paint, particularly on the first coat. Textured walls, dark colour changes and application method (brush, roller or spray) all affect coverage. Always check the manufacturer's coverage guidance on the tin and consider the surface condition before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the paint coverage calculator?
The calculator gives a reliable estimate based on the measurements and coverage rate you enter. Actual usage varies with surface condition, application method and paint type, so always check the manufacturer's coverage information and consider a wastage allowance.
What paint coverage rate should I use?
Most trade emulsions cover around 12–14 m² per litre per coat. Check the coverage figure printed on your paint tin and enter that value for the most accurate result.
Do I need to include primer or undercoat?
This calculator focuses on finish coats. If you are painting bare or dark surfaces you may need a separate primer or undercoat — calculate that as an additional coat with the relevant product coverage.
How much wastage should I allow?
A 5–10% wastage allowance is common for brush and roller work. Use 10–15% if you are spraying or working on porous surfaces where more paint is absorbed.
